Wongha B. Duck Dude
This small, quirky work came to life shortly after my move from Johannesburg—often humorously referred to as “the big smoke” or “gangster’s paradise.” Amid the shift, this peculiar little duck appeared in my art, and I liked him enough to let him stay.
Unintentionally, his name, “Wongha,” echoes that of a harsh street drug used in cities like Durban, Cape Town, and Joburg, notorious for rendering users into a zombie-like state. At the time, I hadn’t encountered the term, but the uncanny connection made me pause. Why had I instinctively chosen that name?
This piece stands as a whimsical yet introspective reminder of how art can tap into unconscious currents, blending the absurd, the curious, and the enigmatic. “Wongha B. Duck Dude” straddles humor and unease, much like the unpredictable dynamics of city life itself.
